Wernher Von Braun Labs for Advanced Research is a non-profit private organization. It provides R&D and Innovation services to Companies and Government institutions. If required, based on the technical novelty it develops for its customers, the Center organizes the associated processes (industrial and others) to make ideas come true as new products, services and businesses to its customers, assisting up to the pilot-implementation phases.
“With the head in the sky and the feet firmly set on the ground” – this is how I would describe Von Braun Labs, meaning we are moved by the ultimate exploration goals in science, building our way by generating tangible and valuable innovative results in the process. Our Team of collaborators covers all the aspects required to transform exploration ideals into results, which, by consequence, propel further exploration. The Center’s unique characteristic is not only to create and develop ideas and solutions, but also to structure the whole ecosystem to make it real and commercially viable. We named our Center after Dr. Wernher von Braun’s accomplishments because he and his Team represent the guiding light and inspiration for the model that we make to provide new horizons and value to customers and collaborators. Wernher Magnus Maximilian von Braun was born in Wirsitz, Germany, on March 23, 1912. Son of parents of tbe Swedish-Prussian aristocracy, von Braun attended the best private schools in Germany, achieving his PhD in physics from the University of Berlim in 1934. Von Braun already worked as the director of the systems development for the German effort in the rockets innitiative since he was 20 years old. He developed and expanded the concept of scientific projects supported in industrial applications (which was already a model practiced in their home country since the mid-nineteenth century) in a complex organization capable of producing large operating systems – way different than rocket development of amateur groups in societies that were formed across Europe since the 1920s driven by scientific progress and the novels of Jules Verne.
Dr. von Braun combined in a special way the entrepreneurial characteristics and scientist, being the catalyzing element of several necessary institutions (Government, the Industrial segments, Academic, services, etc.) so that the technological solutions could find use in a broad and robust way – both for industrial applications derived, as for space exploration – his main objective in his life.
In Dr. von Braun’s vision, the concepts of space and time from Immanuel Kant in some way joined the observable physical space and time, tangible, so the journey to space also represented a trip to the place of moral and thought. His deepest desire that he could go to space motivated his work to engage people behind the multiple organizations that were needed to undertake the journey to this world where the eternal and the infinite touch the reality of day-to-day.
Jules Verne, a French novelist, wrote in the 1860s that three Americans would be launched to the Moon in a vehicle that operated in stages, from an island in the Atlantic, in the region of Florida, and would return landing at the sea, being acclaimed in the streets throughout the world. In fact, exactly 100 years later, three Americans undertook this exactly journey in a rocket, at the time that weighed 3 million pounds in over 100 meters high, the only machine ever built by mankind with this capability (up to the present Today) – the machine, the Saturn V was developed in the dynamics of innovation in the United States by Dr. von Braun and his Time after World War II.
During the war, the foundations for the rocket technology were built in Peenemunde on the Baltic Sea, where more than eight thousand scientists, engineers and technicians coordinated by von Braun developed the A4, which would have a military version with the name of V2. This approach led to small effective results in war scenarios, but represented the future in new technology tactics, so the team and the knowledge was absorbed by the United States at the end of the conflict.
The Saturn V is the result of a large and complex teamwork, which consists of the same team that got the job in Germany in the 20s and 30s with the coordination of Dr. von Braun and was composed by people who shared the same idea of making a space journey a reality, which could only be dreamed of since the ancient times. With the supervision of von Braun, within only 30 years, rockets that were bench curiosities in the laboratory, that would fly no more than a meter long, were transformed into reliable machines, able to take more than 30 tons of payload floor and send manned systems to escape the Earth’s gravity and undertake travel to any places forces from the ties that bound man to his place of origin.
The life story of Dr. von Braun is rich in every way. Despite the Second World War context of him moving to a new country – the United States – and the new realities of the world that reorganized, von Braun held together your team and also the support of the institutions that were needed to undertake the exploration of space. In 1945, von Braun and a hundred scientists were transferred to the United States, adding to them other technical personnel over the following years – Germany and the USA, until in 1960 the team, which had grown to more than 40 thousand people, formed the core of the largest Center of NASA, the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Von Braun and his Team have developed several successful vehicles such as what has launched the first American satellite in orbit (1958), the first American astronaut in space (1961) and the first manned circumnavigation of the Moon in 1968. In July 1969, Neil Armstrong was the first man to set foot on another celestial body, the moon, after traveling with the Saturn V rocket.
Wernher von Braun had close friends and / or acquaintances on every continent; he was an experienced pilot (with more flight hours than some of the astronauts themselves), besides being an accomplished diver, hunter and sport fisherman. Von Braun had a deep knowledge of philosophical issues that binds the Christian religion with Science. Moreover, he was an exemplary father and husband.
He resigned from NASA in 1972 to become the Vice President of Fairchild Industries in Washington, DC. He died in 1977 without in fact becoming old (65 years old). Von Braun received more than 25 honorary degrees of PhD, numerous honors and the Medal of Honor of the American Congress. One of his daughters, Dr. Margrit von Braun, is today one of the most influential people in her industry, being active in various and complex and environmental projects aimed at improving the viability of the industrial growth with life on planet Earth. In addition to that, she’s also the coordinator of several social programs.
The Von Braun Labs Center for Advanced Research honors Dr. von Braun and his team by looking for, in the same spirit of integrating all institutions and elements of the company, to implement in a practical way the necessary basis for the INNOVATION & SCIENTIFIC EXPLORATION COMBINED.
